Dr. Dunning entered as Second Lieutenant and progressed to the rank of Lt. Col. prior to retirement. While on active duty, he was an infantry officer with a reconnaissance speciality, qualified for both parachute and scuba duty. Several assignments of note were with the Military Advisory Command in Viet Nam, from 1967-68; instructor with the Army Special Forces School at Ft. Bragg, NC, from 1969-71; Reconnaissance Battalion Commander, from 1971-72; Marine Corps Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations, from 1979-80; and Marine Corps Liaison to the Secretary of the Navy for Information Management Systems, 1980-82.
